Tarifa is on the southernmost tip of the European continent, where the coast of Gibraltar is so close to the African shore that they almost touch. The air stream effect of the strait gives the winds extra propulsion and acceleration.
The constant winds have made Tarifa Europe's prime surfing destination, and this is why Tarifa is also called the "Capital City of Wind".

With our two Club Mistral centres, we cater to all wind-surfing skill levels and all windforces: one centre is located directly at the Hurricane Hotel, and the Rancho Valdevaqueros centre in the dunes. Both centres are right on the white, sandy beach, which extends over 10 km and is arguably one of the finest on the Spanish coast. At the western end, the beach ends at a dune. Our Club Mistral centre at the Valdevaqueros Hotel is a suitable spot for windsurfing beginners and intermediates, and we offer first-rate instruction and rental options to kitesurfers, who have their own dedicated area separate from the windsurfers' zone.

The surroundings have retained much of their original character: the "white villages", flamenco and sevillana dancing, the sherry bodegas and tapas bars are all there to provide visitors with a glimpse of the typical Andalusian atmosphere, and for those who are interested, there are also plenty of cultural attractions just round the corner - trips to the famous Andalusian cities and towns of Seville, Jerez, Cadiz and Ronda are merely the nearest destinations. If you have never been to Morocco, you can explore Tanger on a conducted day trip. Those who are even slightly familiar with Spain will know that nights are not (only) there to sleep – and Tarifa also has plenty to offer when it comes to nightlife! This is clearly an ideal place to have a ball – both on the water and on the shore.
