Windsurfing Instruction
Starter & Refresher Training (on beginner equipment) along with the Kids & Youngster Training start in the morning. The light winds and glassy water are perfect for your first windsurfing experience, making everything as easy as possible.
The Kids' Starter Training for kids aged between 6 and 11 years take 1 hour and are generally held from 10:00- 11:00 every morning.
The Youngster (12-16 years) and Adult Starter & Refresher Training are held between 11:00 and 13:00.
Once the wind has picked up, first Advanced Training (on funboards) units get underway at 13:30 pm. By this time the conditions will be perfect for fast tacks, basic gybes and your first sessions using a harness or beach-starting. The second Advanced Training units start at 3 pm. Now the advanced windsurfers get their chance! With a minimum of 3 - 4 Bft, it’s the perfect time for waterstart lessons, harness and foot-strap work as well as carve gybes, duck gybes and so on. Be prepared to deal with a bit of chop though!
Apart from the above group trainings we also offer Semi-Private and Private Training, they are arranged on request!
Where are the lessons?
The courses are all held in front of the Club Mistral Center. There’s a seating/chill out area for theory and a simulator direct in front of the school.
The water next to the Center has several sandbars running through it, creating a semi-shallow area. Beginners and Intermediates can therefore indulge in flat, shallow water in the morning. In the cross on wind from the right you also safe from drifting out to sea.
Wind direction:
Thermal winds blow cross on from the southeast (right), gradually picking up during the day. The gentle morning breeze is perfect for those having their first go at windsurfing. The conditions are particularly good for kids.
Generally you can expect the thermal to produce between 3,5 – 6 Bft, good days will easily see a force 5 though. The wind here is also particularly constant.
Your best chances of catching the thermal winds are between May and September. There is also a local wind called the ‘Garbi’, which has been increasingly more common in the last few years. The ‘Garbi’ tends to appear after the south-easterly thermal wind has kicked in, with the wind slowly swinging to a southerly around 4 pm. This southern wind tends to be somewhere between 5 and 6 Bft, flattening the water to produce perfect freestyle conditions.
‘Tramuntana’ on the other hand is a little different. This wind comes cascading down from the Pyrenees in the north, usually picking up to between 5 and 8 Bft. The water state also changes, leaving you with small waves breaking by the beach and perfect Bump and Jump conditions further out. If you’ve mastered the waterstart, then you have probably dreamt of these conditions. 4.0 – 5.5m sails become the norm and we unleash the wave boards.
Once it arrives the weather tends to stay that way for 2 or 3 days.
In conclusion:
When the thermal is blowing, this is the perfect spot for learning, regardless of age. With the variation in the wind during the day anyone can enjoy themselves, from absolute newbies in the morning through to the more experienced in the afternoon. Once the ‘Tramuntana’ kicks in, the conditions will certainly be too tough for some, especially as it tends pick up early in the morning. However if you’re advanced, there’s nothing better!
