Essaouira, on Morocco's Atlantic coast, is an outstanding surfing spot. International surfing competitions are held in the surf at Essaouira, Morocco's windiest coastal town. Surf freaks swear by the wild, mountainous waves.
The Purple Islands (Isle of Mogador), off the bay, are the reason why the waves in the bay of Essaouira are smaller and less dangerous than at other spots. The bay of Essouira is especially suitable for novice and intermediate surfers.
Unimpeded, the winter gales sweep across the flat lowlands. In summer, constant sea winds force temperatures down and bring waves to Morocco's coast. Water temperatures reach a maximum of 18° C. Wind and wave conditions are especially good between May and September. Morocco is a year-round surfing Mecca.
Sidi Kaouki (25 km south of Essaouira)
A long sandy beach provides ideal conditions for advanced surfers. The shore break is somewhat higher than at Essaouira, but the spot also offers fabulously long waves. You can start directly in many of the waves.
Attention must be paid to low and high tides and the currents.
Cap Sim (2 km north of Sidi Kaouki)
The perfect spot, if there are too many surfers in Sidi Kaouki, as conditions are more or less identical.
High and rising tides offer the best conditions for surfing.
There are fantastic surfing spots all along the Moroccan coast; we also know a number of secret spots that are hard to find.
We also organise trips to other spots. It is also easy to hire a car or take a taxi to these spots.
