Welcome to Tunisia! Marhaba fi Tunis!
Tunisia, which also includes the island of Djerba, is the northernmost country of the vast African continent and is characterized by a mixture of Mediterranean and dry, warm Saharan climates.
Tunisia has a long, 3000-year-old history; under the Romans, Djerba was a trading place for camel caravans coming from the Sahara. Prior to the Spanish conquest, the Vandals, Arabs and Normans vied for control of this region.
As a counterpart to the endless expanses of the Tunisian Sahara, there is a verdant area in the north with lush valleys and meadows. The Tunisian coast is famous for its magnificent panoramic views over the turquoise sea, its charming villages, whose houses conceal beautiful interior views behind the "Moucharabieh“, the decorative gates covered with hibiscus and bougainvilleas.
With its approx. 1.2 million date palms, the island of Djerba is also known as the "palm island."
The Djerbans are extraordinarily hospitable and open-minded people with a keen sense of business; they still attach great importance to their customs and traditions.
There is plenty to do in Houmt Souk, the capital of the island, which has about 25,000 inhabitants and numerous cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops and banks, and even a shopping centre.
You can enjoy a tasty evening meal with fish and seafood dishes in one of the many restaurants, whose recipes have a long culinary tradition.
