After a snowy and cold winter, we decided at Easter to travel with the family to Club Mistral & Skyriders Golf de Roses. Although it’s quite a few kilometers from Bavaria to the Costa Brava by car - it was worth it!

We had some good days with wind and thermals and the Tramontana, and often sunny weather. The water temperatures were still fresh, but that’s why we have wetsuits! Every morning we enjoyed breakfast on our lovely terrace. The center was only 20 meters away from our accommodation, which is perfect for a family holiday, and in addition there were other families around, so we didn’t see our children very often.. We were lucky to stay in a very nice bungalow at Camping Ballena Alegre directly behind the Club Mistral & Skyriders center. At this time the camping ground was not officially open, but the center was renting out some of the bungalows.

Nora and Ronan, who discovered this place a few years ago, manage the center very professionally and everything is well organized. During low season Nora manages the rental of the bungalows and Ronan the bar Oasis. For lunch the beach bar serves delicious baguettes and salads, and once a week there is a BBQ. The new team has arrived to support Nora and Ronan. Valentina, Francesco, Toni, Olivier and Boja are very friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed our stay with them. Some of the evenings ended up into the early morning hours at the bar with DJ Ronan!

The spot is perfect for windsurfers and kitesurfers, especially in spring during Tramontana with up to 7-8 bft. The thermal wind is more moderate and is pretty reliable around midday. Marie, our 7 years old daughter had her first windsurfing lesson with Nora and she had loads of fun - and the hot shower was a real must afterwards. In summer the camping is very busy, so it‘s advisable to pre-book lessons and the equipment. 

There is a separate kitesurf zone with lots of space during the low season. In high season only a limited amount of kitesurfers are allowed, therefore we recommend again to book in advance. The well-trained kitesurf instructors pay great attention to safety and they provide professional training for beginners and intermediates whether in a group or private. 

Even if the wind is not blowing there is plenty to do. The center is equipped with the latest Mistral stand up paddle boards with which you can enjoy nice trips along the coast. What about a SUP trip in the morning to the Hostal Ampuries? I did it and it was amazing! Not to mention the delicious breakfast buffet with a view to the sea. Endless walks on the beach, racing or mountain bikes, golf or ballooning – you can do almost everything! Those interested in culture must visit the Dali Museum in Figueres or beautiful Barcelona!

Those who don’t like long car journeys can fly to Barcelona or Girona and rent a car on site. Also for people who don’t like to stay at a camping site there are many alternatives. Typically Spanish and nice is Can Mas, only 3 kilometers away from the center. There you will find a very pretty and stylish accommodation with very good breakfast and lots of home made products. Recently an annex has been added with 3 very nice ground floor rooms with large terraces.

The Hostal Empuries is also recommended, 20 minutes walk away from the center and located directly on the beach. This is the perfect hotel for those who like to enjoy more luxury with SPA and massage. The new SPA rooms have modern furnishings and some of them have beach views, and don’t forget the great breakfast which I already mentioned!!
Golf de Roses is a super nice destination and even in August there are still some free places available at the camping ground, so this could be a nice alternative for those who haven’t planned anything yet. For further information and advice, we look forward to your call, fax or email.
