21|04|09 +++ Travelling from Gran Canaria to the Cape Verde Islands

To escape from the uncommon coolish winter on Gran Canaria and to experience another spot our team rider Moritz Mauch and his father Claus decided to leave for a week to the capeverdian island Sal.
They had planned an easy and chilled out windsurfing trip, but soon they realised that this won’t come to pass: Arriving in time on the wave paradise Sal, they realized that Moritz gear get stuck at Praia, the main island of the Cape Verde Islands. With 15 knots the wind wasn’t strong during the first days and Moritz enjoyed the little waves with a board and sails from the Club Mistral station nearby. But – to be honest – Moritz expected a little bit more concerning wind and above all the waves.
Yet, Moritz small 48 litre board arrived finally and they picked it up at the airport.
The trip was gradually nearing its end; but instead of being relaxed after one week holiday, Claus got some mean stomach problems – is it possible to eat too much of the yummy tuna fish in allvariations? Thus it was a quick decision: With this deplorable condition, the long way home would be horrible for Claus.
Of course feeling sorry for his father, Moritz couldn’t hide that he was really delighted about the extra week extension. Claus got well a few days later and with him the wind and the waves. The forecast promised excellent conditions – not even for Punta Preta but especially for Santa Maria Bay - and everyone was looking forward for a real big day.
From day to day the wind was growing and on “Big Wednesday” it was sweeping with 30 knots over the island. Logo-high waves were rolling in clean sets at Punta Leme. Father and son were ripping the waves and didn’t leave the water until sunset. Within the end of the week the wind was dropping gradually, but the waves kept rolling and due to his weight Moritz caught a lot. Thus he achieved respect from all local surfers, because in the meantime also kiters and surfers were gathering at the spot.
To sum up, this holiday has been a successful windsurfing trip for both, and Moritz is already working towards his goal to come back to Cabo Verde.

“Muito obrigado” to the Club Mistral team and all the other locals, turning our holiday in something special and extraordinary.
