31|10|05 +++ Trip to Morocco
And what if the wind nevertheless leaves something to be desired on one or the other day in Tarifa? Fortunately, there are lots of other worthwhile ways of spending one's time in Tarifa...
One such alternative – a really worthwhile one that everyone should seize – is a trip to Morocco.
Tarifa is only 8 km from Africa, and what can already be easily seen on clear, calm days can be reached in only about 40 minutes by fast ferry. 40 minutes and you land in a completely different world.
A round trip by ferry costs about €50, and don't forget your passport – without it, the trip will not be possible of course.
It's best to buy your ticket the evening before from one of the numerous travel bureaus, so that you can launch into your "adventure" the next day without any worries… As there is a ferry every hour, there's no stress anyway.
It's a good idea to make an early start, however, so that you have plenty of time to take a good look around Tangier. If you leave Tarifa at 9:00, it will be only 7:30 when you dock at a still sleepy Tangier (Morocco has a time difference of 2 hours) and you can get your bearings before things really get moving there.
And those who don't feel like taking a look at Tangier under their own steam can immediately hire one of the 50 guides that will be milling around you as soon as you set foot onshore at the port. Be careful, however – tour prices vary from 10 to 50 euros and here, as for the rest of the day, the motto is: bargain, bargain, bargain.
It's not such a bad idea to take a guide, as one learns a lot about the history of Tangier, about the people, customs, habits and culture.
So, off you go – into the city, the ancient part of course, because the new part of the city is rather westernised and not really worth visiting, into the hustle and bustle and through the maze of narrow alleys, the markets with all their colours and smells, the shops. In Tangier you can spend hours and hours just strolling around constantly discovering new, beautiful and interesting things.
You should therefore definitely allot an entire day to Tangier to give yourself enough time to really explore all of the city's interesting nooks and crannies, to observe people and by so doing way simply immerse yourself in this very different world and above all become a little bit more familiar with Arab culture, whose image, as we know, is somewhat tarnished at present, thanks to several nations… and enough time simply to obtain your own honest, unbiased impression of everything...
You will certainly find the whole experience really worthwhile!
