08|02|07 +++ Big Bay Classic Wave SA
First to say, that this was my first windsurf wave competition ever! 52 riders fom all countries took part in the wave competition as well as many riders from PWA, who are training down here For the upcoming contest season.
The fantastically organized Windsurf event took place in Big Bay, which is a favourite wave spot for high jumps.
In the first competition day, Big bay has delivered amazing wind conditions with logo to mast high wave sets and a bit gusty winds for 5qm sails. The judges decided to count only three waves, therfore the contest turned into a pure down the line competition with windsurfers ripping the waves up and down, smacking the lips and throwing insaine aerials until the sun went down.

Last heats of single elimination
were finished in a beautiful evening scenery with sun setting into
the ocean behind Robben island. Unfortunatelly the single elimination didn´t finish and we stopped just before the final.
For next day there was no wind forecast. But weather was fantastic, so we were enjoying South African ambient and relaxing for the finall day of the competition.
Next day with skippers meeting at 12 o´clock, judges decided to wait for the south eastern winds to kick in and finish single elimination.
Unfortunatelly there was no more swell so waves with height about 1.5 m were the only ones, which was what Big bay had on offer for us
that day. So final was finished in lighter winds with small waves. Nothing to compare with the first day.The winner of the finall was Kevin Mevissen from Holland, who showed amazing
performance and was for me the best windsurfer of the contest. Second place went to Bernd Flessner from Germany, third to Oisin van Gelderen from Irland, fourth to Tine Slabe from Slovenia and me finishing on a fifth position!!!!!
After the final, head judge Olaf van Tool decided to run super session. Conditions were still quite ok so eight windsurfers, each in two heats, went out to how their best performance for the crowd on the beach. Everybody was pushing it up, so we have seen many radical jumps mixed with new school freestyle moves.
In the evening before price giving, Boardseeker magazin team presented to the public their new windsurfing DVD,which is a display of the best happennings in windsurfing in year 2006.
After price giving we have enjoyed hospitality of a new building of Big bay baywatch club including beach bar with beautifull view overlooking the whole Big bay.
Big thanks to organizators and see you next year!!!!
Aloha from Cape town!!!
